Scotiabank Saddledome (Calgary Flames Stadium)

Owned by the City of Calgary, the Scotiabank Saddledome is home to the Calgary Flames of the NHL’s Western Conference Pacific Division.  Opened in 1983, it is one of the oldest arenas that an NHL team calls home, after Madison Square Garden in New York and Climate Pledge in Seattle.  The arena has seen many major events over the years, including being a venue for the 1988 Winter Olympics.  The arena’s roof is shaped like a horse saddle, which earned the arena the name “Saddledome,” as it was part of many of the suggestions put forth during construction.

The Flames were based in Atlanta when they were founded in 1972 and moved to Calgary eight years later.  Nine years after that the Flames captured their single Stanley Cup to date, defeating the Montreal Canadiens.  Begun during the playoffs in 1986 and having been repeated many times since, Flames fans attending certain games almost all wear red, with the red home jersey being extremely popular.  The tradition is referred to as the, “C of Red.”
