PNC Arena (Carolina Hurricanes Stadium)

PNC Arena opened in October of 1999, just in time for the 99-00 season of the Carolina Hurricanes, who had moved from Hartford, Connecticut where they were known as the Whalers. The arena cost $158 million to build and has been renovated several times since opening.  In 2019 the City of Raleigh committed to and approved a total budget of approximately $200 million over 25 years for continued improvement of the arena.  Over the years the sound system, scoreboards, and many other arena features have been upgraded.

The franchise now known as the Carolina Hurricanes began as the New England Whalers of the WHA in 1971, which then merged with the NHL in 1979.  For nearly 20 years the team then skated as the Hartford Whalers, before moving to North Carolina.  The team changed their color scheme from green and blue which went with the Whaler identity, to black and red, the colors of their new neighbors, the North Carolina State Wolfpack.  The Hurricanes have played for the Stanley Cup twice, coming away as winners in 2006.
