Climate Pledge Arena is located in Seattle, Washington and is home to the NHL’s Seattle Kraken. The arena is located in Seattle Center, an entertainment complex in the downtown area which was originally the site for the 1962 World’s Fair. As of the middle of 2021, the arena was being renovated at the cost of $1.15 billion in preparation for the upcoming hockey and basketball seasons. The Kraken are an NHL expansion team and will bring back professional hockey for the first time to downtown Seattle since the Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League played there in 2008. The Seattle Storm of the WNBA and Seattle University’s Redhawks Men’s Basketball team will return as tenants of the arena, too.
The arena originally opened in 1962 as the Washington State Pavillion and was soon after converted into the Washington State Coliseum as a cornerstone of the Seattle Center. Over the years the arena has hosted NBA All-Star games and festivities, the Goodwill Games, and concerts by top performers from every genre. The Amazon Corporation currently owns the naming rights to the stadium and chose to bring attention to a current issue instead of the more typical corporate naming convention in choosing the Climate Pledge Arena moniker.
