Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. is home to the NHL’s Washington Capitals. After approximately two years of construction at the cost of $260 million, Capital One Arena opened on December 2nd, 1997 and is regarded as one of the driving catalysts of the revitalization of Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood. Prior to opening, both major occupants, the Capitals and the Wizards played outside of the District in Landover, Maryland. Bringing the venue for two professional sports teams into D.C. proper allowed much greater access to games, increasing attendance and fan support.
The Washington Capitals, or Caps, currently play in the NHL’s Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division and were founded as an expansion team in 1974. Like many expansion franchises across sports, The Capitals began humbly, but have since captured the Stanley Cup for the Capital City crowd in the 2017-18 season. The Capitals share Capital One Arena with the NBA’s Washington Wizards and Georgetown University’s Men’s Basketball team.
